How to Make Synthetic Wigs Look Natural: Tips to Reduce Shine

Although wigs made from real human hair look the most natural and realistic, their price often deters many people.

As a result, many turn to synthetic fiber wigs as a more affordable alternative.

Synthetic wigs are indeed cheaper, but they tend to have a slight shiny sheen, which becomes especially noticeable under sunlight. It’s easy for others to tell that the hair isn’t real.

Surely, you don’t want the unnatural shine of a synthetic wig to reveal that your hair isn’t real.

So how can you reduce the shine on synthetic wigs, allowing you to wear them naturally for outings or events?

In fact, it only requires a few simple materials to tone down the shine.

1. Dry Shampoo
As the name suggests, “dry shampoo” doesn’t require water. Instead, it uses absorbent powder to remove oil and dirt from the hair.

You can also evenly spray dry shampoo on a synthetic wig to remove its unnatural shine.

However, dry shampoo has one drawback: while it reduces shine, the white powder can temporarily alter the wig’s color.

If you don’t want your wig to change color, be sure to choose the right dry shampoo. For example, dark-colored wigs work best with dry shampoo specially formulated for dark hair.

After spraying, gently rub the powder evenly across the wig to reduce color change.

Dry shampoo is particularly useful if you suddenly decide to wear a wig before going out.

2. Baby Powder
Baby powder, commonly used to prevent diaper rash, can also help remove the shine from synthetic wigs.

If you don’t have dry shampoo on hand, baby powder can be a good substitute.

Simply place a small amount of baby powder on your palm, gently pat it onto the wig, shake off the excess, and use a comb or fingers to distribute it evenly throughout the wig. This will significantly reduce the unnatural sheen.

Tip: Not all powders are suitable for reducing wig shine. Some can leave visible white residue, so avoid experimenting with random powders beyond these two options.

3. Wig Shampoo
While many wigs can be washed with regular shampoo, some brands offer shampoos specifically formulated for synthetic wigs.

These shampoos contain chemical agents that remove the unnatural shine from synthetic fibers.

After washing with wig shampoo, let the wig air dry in a cool, ventilated area.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, made from fermented apple juice, is commonly used in food as a preservative, dressing, or condiment.

It also has beauty and health benefits. For synthetic wigs, apple cider vinegar can act as a softening agent.

How to use:

  • Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar into warm water.
  • Immerse the wig in the solution for up to 20 minutes. You may notice white residue in the water, which indicates a chemical reaction is occurring.
  • Rinse the wig thoroughly with clean water.
  • Place the wig on a wig stand and gently comb it to remove tangles.

Once dry, your synthetic wig will appear natural without unnatural shine.

5. Fabric Softener
Fabric softener works similarly to apple cider vinegar.

If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can try using fabric softener in the same way.

With these methods, you can easily reduce the unnatural shine of synthetic wigs, making them look more natural and wearable for any occasion.
