6 Surprising Benefits of Being Bald You May Not Have Thought About

Article

Today, hair loss has become one of the common sources of appearance anxiety for many people. Thinning hair and baldness can bring various troubles—being teased by friends with nicknames like “bald guy,” being overlooked or rejected by potential partners, or even receiving unwanted attention and comments from strangers.

However, everything has two sides. While hair loss can certainly affect one’s appearance, it also comes with a few unexpected advantages. Today, let’s take a look at some surprising benefits of being bald—you might not have thought of these before!

1. You Save Money on Shampoo and Haircuts

People who are bald don’t need to spend much time or money on hair care. When taking a shower, simply rinsing the scalp with body wash is usually enough, saving a considerable amount on shampoo and conditioner.

Haircuts are also unnecessary. In fact, when shaving your beard, you can easily shave off the small hairs on your head at the same time. It’s quick, simple, and very convenient.

2. No Hair Styling—Saving Time and Effort

Compared to people with full hair, bald individuals don’t need to spend time styling or managing their hair every day. There’s no need for hair gel, combing, or blow-drying.

During hot summers, being bald can even feel refreshing. Without thick hair trapping heat and sweat, the scalp stays cooler and more comfortable.

3. People May Assume You’re Smart and Successful

Many people have heard sayings like “baldness is a sign of intelligence” or “most bald men are wealthy.” In popular perception, bald individuals are often associated with intelligence, authority, or financial success.

In real life, many professors, scientists, mathematicians, and scholars happen to be bald. This has strengthened the impression that bald people are knowledgeable, authoritative, and hold higher social status.

4. Potentially Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Some research has suggested that people with hair loss may have a slightly lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among men.

Studies from universities in the Netherlands have indicated that male hair loss is often related to higher levels of androgens (male hormones). Higher androgen levels may help prevent cholesterol from accumulating on blood vessel walls, potentially reducing the risk of conditions such as coronary heart disease and hypertension.

Additionally, a Japanese study observed 242 bald men between the ages of 50 and 79 over a period of 12 years. Researchers found that these men tended to have higher hormone levels and a mortality rate about 48% lower than men without baldness.

5. You Notice Rain Earlier Than Others

Without hair acting as a barrier, bald people may feel raindrops on their scalp sooner than those with hair.

There’s even a humorous joke about this: A bald programmer was standing at a crosswalk when it suddenly began to rain. He immediately said, “It’s raining.” About five seconds later, the pedestrians around him finally realized and said, “Oh, it’s raining!”

The joke highlights how bald individuals can feel raindrops directly on their heads, while people with hair take slightly longer to notice.

6. You Can Easily Change Hairstyles with Wigs

If you don’t like the bald look, you can always change your appearance with wigs or hats. Today, custom wigs have become increasingly popular.

Even for people who are completely bald, professional customization can design a hairstyle that suits their head shape and personal style. From slicked-back hair and textured perms to Korean-style middle parts and pompadours, a wide range of fashionable hairstyles can be achieved.

Many people feel troubled or insecure because of baldness. But when you look at it from another perspective, baldness actually comes with several advantages. Knowing these benefits might make you feel less worried or self-conscious about hair loss.

The Chinese writer Jia Pingwa once wrote in his essay “Baldness”:
“If there is a moon in the sky, I too can shine with my own light.”

So there’s no need to worry too much about being bald. And if you ever feel like changing your look, you can always wear a wig. As long as you believe in yourself, you can still shine with confidence.
