From “Hi, Mom” to Real Life: The Truth About Alopecia Areata and Smart Solutions
The movie Hi, Mom, which was released on the first day of the Chinese New Year, has captured the hearts of many viewers. Directed by Jia Ling in her debut, the film received overwhelming praise and quickly became a “dark horse” in the film industry.
The first half of the movie is lighthearted and humorous, while the second half becomes deeply emotional and moving. Overall, it’s a well-balanced and engaging film. One particularly memorable moment involves the character “Guixiang,” who suffers from patchy hair loss (commonly known as “ghost shaving” or alopecia areata). Her attempts to play on the sports field end in awkward retreats, creating both comedic and emotional moments.
At first, Jia Xiaoling and Li Huanying try to use ginger as a remedy for Guixiang’s hair loss. However, when they notice a discarded piece of ginger on the ground, it subtly suggests that ginger is ineffective.
And in reality, that’s true—ginger does not treat alopecia areata, especially not in a short period of time. When time is limited, relying on such remedies simply won’t work.
Later, they use black dog fur as a temporary cover to hide the bald patch, making it less noticeable. Unfortunately, during a game, Jia Xiaoling makes a mistake while serving, causing the “wig” to fall off. Embarrassed, Guixiang runs away. Although she later returns wearing a hat, a gust of wind blows it off, exposing the bald patch again, and she flees once more.
Through this short scene, we can clearly see how much hair loss can impact a person’s appearance and confidence. Most people with alopecia areata try to hide it, fearing judgment from others, which often leads to feelings of insecurity.
In fact, “ghost shaving” is medically known as alopecia areata, a common non-scarring form of hair loss. It is generally believed to be related to autoimmune conditions, genetics, stress, or hormonal imbalances. In the film, Guixiang’s mother also experiences the same condition, suggesting a possible genetic link.
Many people with alopecia areata may experience natural recovery, but in some cases, it can recur repeatedly. Severe cases may even lead to extensive hair loss or total baldness, making it difficult to completely cure.
If you want to quickly improve your appearance, it’s nearly impossible to regrow hair in a short time. However, wigs can effectively conceal bald areas and enhance overall appearance.
Today, many people are choosing advanced hair replacement systems instead of traditional wigs. Unlike regular wigs, these systems are secure and do not easily fall off—even during activities like sports or running.
Moreover, they are far more breathable and comfortable. Partial hair replacement can be applied specifically to bald spots, blending seamlessly with your natural hair. Even up close, it looks incredibly realistic and natural.
If Guixiang had chosen a modern hair replacement solution, she probably wouldn’t have faced those embarrassing moments on the field—and who knows, maybe her team would have even won the game! 😉
