Quality Over Quantity: A Story of Friendship, Hair Loss, and Finding Confidence

People often say that when it comes to making friends, quality matters far more than quantity.

When we are young, our social circles are large and we have many friends. However, as we grow older, those circles gradually shrink. In the end, the ones who stay by your side are perhaps your true friends!

Zhang Fan is a programmer born in the 1990s. He moved to Guangzhou all by himself for work, and before he knew it, two years had already passed. With his cheerful personality, he got along great with his colleagues and even had a best buddy he felt he could talk to about anything.

They say you shouldn't get too close to your coworkers, but Zhang Fan didn't buy into that. He built a particularly tight bond with his colleague, Li Jian. They even rented apartments in the exact same building. When working late, they would grab late-night snacks, chat, and play video games together.

The two held similar positions in the company and even shared similar body types and fashion styles. The only difference was that Li Jian had been in a relationship for two years, while Zhang Fan had been single since birth.

Truth be told, Zhang Fan was quite good-looking. Standing at 1.82 meters (about 6 feet) tall with a very nice personality, he was the quintessential "sunshine boy."

During his university days, he played for the school basketball team and was highly popular among the girls. They would often bring him water and snacks, but he politely declined them all. After graduation, he hadn't focused much on romance, which led to him being 25 years old without a single dating experience.

After working for two years, did Zhang Fan really not want a girlfriend? Of course he did. It was just that...

He suffered from severe hair loss. The top of his head was almost completely bald, making him too self-conscious to even try looking for a partner. He wore a hat every time he went out. Whenever a strong gust of wind blew his hat off, the embarrassment was absolutely unbearable!

Li Jian knew about this struggle, but instead of comforting him, he frequently made fun of it. In private, he even called him "Baldy Zhang." At first, Zhang Fan didn't mind, treating it as just harmless banter and mutual teasing between close friends.

But one time, Zhang Fan finally reached his breaking point!

It was during a company gathering—a lively barbecue out in the suburbs. Over 30 people from the company attended, and the journey there was filled with talking and laughing.

Once they arrived and set up the grills, they started cooking. Perhaps it was the heat from the fire, but Zhang Fan felt his head sweating constantly and kept reaching up to wipe it. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew, and his hat landed right on the barbecue grill...

Everyone present saw it, and a sudden hush fell over the crowd. Breaking the awkward silence, Li Jian yelled out loudly, "I told you guys Zhang Fan was bald and you didn't believe me! Now you see it, right?"

Zhang Fan was already mortified, but hearing Li Jian's words made his face burn bright red. He immediately fled the scene.

He walked to a nearby pavilion, overwhelmed by an indescribable pain in his heart. "So this is what they call a good friend," he thought bitterly. "Someone who stabs you in the back when your guard is down!"

Just then, another colleague, Ah Chen, walked over and patted him on the shoulder. "It's alright. What's the big deal about being bald? Let me tell you a secret: I'm actually bald just like you."

Zhang Fan looked at Ah Chen's hair in disbelief. "No way, your hair is so thick, and your hairstyle is handsome and trendy. How can you be bald?"

Ah Chen chuckled. "Haha, the truth is, I use a secret weapon that easily gives me a full head of thick hair!"

Zhang Fan shook his head, staring at him in complete confusion.

"Alright, I won't keep you in suspense. Look at this."

Ah Chen then lifted a hairpiece from the top of his head, revealing a completely bald scalp underneath. Zhang Fan's jaw dropped. "This is incredible! If you hadn't told me, I never would have noticed."

"Yeah, I got a custom hair replacement. The results are incredibly natural. Right now, you're the only person in the entire company who knows I'm bald!" Ah Chen said, pressing a finger to his lips in a "shush" gesture.

"You can get one too. It only takes about two hours to set up; it's very simple," Ah Chen added.

"Really?" Zhang Fan asked, his face finally lighting up.

"Of course! I had mine done near the high-speed railway station at a Korean hair replacement brand. It's really cost-effective. If you want to do it, I can go with you next month. I need to get a trim anyway!" Ah Chen said with a warm smile.

Zhang Fan nodded, and the two of them walked back to the barbecue area.

A little while later, Li Jian sat down next to Zhang Fan and casually asked, "Zhang Fan, you weren't actually mad just now, were you?" Zhang Fan simply shook his head, acting as if nothing had happened.

However, since that gathering, Zhang Fan never initiated contact with Li Jian again, and the two gradually drifted further and further apart...
