What Is Alopecia Areata? Causes, Symptoms, and How to Prevent Patchy Hair Loss

Alopecia areata, sometimes referred to as “sudden patchy hair loss,” is a non-scarring type of hair loss that can occur in areas of the body where hair grows.

The condition once became a trending topic online when Shen Mengchen shared her experience with alopecia areata. She wrote humorously, “A scalp without hair follicles is like Antarctica without penguins—nothing but pale emptiness and cold.”

Although Shen Mengchen is known for having thick hair, she was still affected by the “curse” of alopecia areata. A smooth bald patch appeared on her scalp, which stood out noticeably against the surrounding dense hair.

Why Does Alopecia Areata Occur?

There are many possible causes of alopecia areata, including:

  • Genetic factors

  • Psychological stress or anxiety

  • Hormonal or endocrine imbalances

  • Certain medications

  • Autoimmune conditions

In her social media post, Shen Mengchen mentioned that her alopecia areata was triggered by stress and anxiety.

Many viewers also noticed a similar situation in the popular Chinese film Hi, Mom. In the movie, the character “Guixiang” suddenly develops a bald patch overnight, which significantly affects her appearance. For someone who values beauty and personal image, this can be quite distressing.

How Is Alopecia Areata Different from Ordinary Hair Loss?

Although alopecia areata is a type of hair loss, it differs from typical thinning hair. Instead of gradual hair loss, it often appears as a clearly defined bald patch, as if a small area of hair has been shaved off. It usually does not cause pain or itching, so the person affected may not even notice it at first.

In addition to appearing on the scalp, alopecia areata can also affect eyebrows, eyelashes, underarm hair, and other body hair, leading to varying degrees of patchy hair loss.

How Is Alopecia Areata Treated?

Most cases of mild alopecia areata have a tendency to heal naturally over time. However, some cases may recur, making treatment more challenging and sometimes requiring a longer recovery period.

Various treatment methods can be used, often in combination, such as:

  • Topical medications applied to the affected area

  • Oral medications prescribed by doctors

  • Local injection therapies

The specific treatment approach usually depends on the severity of the condition.

How to Prevent Alopecia Areata

Although it cannot always be prevented completely, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce the risk.

Some helpful practices include:

  • Maintaining regular eating habits

  • Avoiding excessive late nights

  • Reducing stress and keeping a relaxed mindset

  • Washing and caring for hair properly

  • Ensuring adequate rest and sleep

  • Exercising regularly

  • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables

By paying attention to daily habits and taking care of overall health, it is possible to reduce the likelihood of developing alopecia areata and maintain healthier hair.
