Machine-Made vs. Hand-Tied Wigs: Which One Should You Choose?
Understanding the Differences Between Machine-Made and Hand-Tied Wigs
Lately, many sellers have been promoting machine-made wigs, so today we’ll explain the differences between machine-made and hand-tied wigs. Anyone familiar with wigs knows there are many crafting techniques, but the two main ones are machine-made and hand-tied. Within hand-tied wigs, there are several sub-techniques.
Machine-Made Wigs
Machine-made wigs are generally considered lower in craftsmanship and therefore cheaper—some cost as little as a few hundred RMB. Many manufacturers use a mix of low-quality human hair and a small portion of synthetic fibers to reduce costs. Unsuspecting buyers may be misled into thinking they are buying a premium wig when in reality it is a machine-made product. However, this trick only works on buyers who lack knowledge, and is usually a one-time sale.
Construction:
In machine-made wigs, hair wefts are sewn onto the net base row by row using a machine. The hair used is usually synthetic or low-quality human hair. These wigs are acceptable for occasional wear, but not suitable for daily use, as they cannot be frequently combed or washed. Machine-made wigs are heavier, less breathable, and look less natural.

Hand-Tied Wigs
For natural and breathable wigs, hand-tied wigs are the preferred choice. Hand-tied techniques are divided into ordinary hand-tied and needle-punched (ventilated), also known as the “simulation scalp” method.
-
Ordinary hand-tied wigs:
This is a traditional method where each hair strand is manually tied to the net base. Hair may be tied individually, in pairs, or in small clusters. Advantages include:-
Detailed craftsmanship
-
Realistic appearance
-
Comfortable and breathable
Limitations:
-
Hair strands are not as firmly secured, so over time some may slip into the net
-
Small black dots from knotting may be visible
-
-
Needle-punched hand-tied wigs (Ventilated / “Simulation Scalp”):
Needle-punched is the most realistic hand-tied technique. Hair is first tied onto a primary net layer, then individually punched through a secondary layer of mesh—this is called “needle-punching.”Advantages:
-
Hair appears to grow directly from the scalp
-
Extremely natural appearance from all angles
-
Highly breathable
Needle-punched wigs are labor-intensive and technically demanding, which is why they are more expensive. Even within needle-punched wigs, quality levels vary depending on factory precision and the experience of the craftsmen. Attention to detail affects both the realism and the price.

Summary
-
Machine-made wigs: Affordable, quick to produce, but less natural, heavy, and less durable. Best for short-term or casual use.
-
Hand-tied wigs: More realistic, lightweight, and breathable. Needle-punched hand-tied wigs are the top-tier choice for those seeking ultimate realism and comfort, though they are more expensive.
When choosing a wig, always consider your desired look, comfort, and long-term use. Investing in quality craftsmanship ensures better wearing experience and longer lifespan.
