Wigs 101: How to Choose Realistic, Comfortable, and Long-Lasting Wigs

Understanding Wigs: Hair Quality, Craftsmanship, and How to Choose the Best

With the improvement of living standards, people are increasingly open to wearing wigs. When choosing a wig for daily wear, the first requirement for most buyers is: “It must look realistic and beautiful.” That’s why many sellers prominently advertise “real human hair wigs,” but prices vary widely.

Hair Quality

Even within real human hair wigs, the quality differs. In China, wig hair can be roughly ranked from high to low quality as follows: braided hair, straight hair, and permed hair. All are real hair, but differences in quality affect both lifespan and price.

Where does the hair come from? There are generally two sources:

  1. Hair salons: Many women cut their hair short at salons, leaving the trimmed hair behind. Salons collect these hair strands and sell them to factories for processing. Hair from this source varies in quality and length, and may include chemically treated or damaged hair, so overall quality is lower.

  2. Professional collectors: Decades ago, there were vendors on streets calling out, “Buying hair—long hair wanted!” Even today, in some counties and among southern ethnic minority women who maintain long hair, collectors still buy hair village by village. Large wig manufacturers may send personnel to collect high-quality hair directly. Among all hair types, untreated young girls’ braided hair is highly valued. This hair is strong, straight, smooth to the touch, and makes durable wigs that remain soft and shiny even after styling. Consequently, braided hair commands the highest prices in the wig industry.

However, as consumer awareness grows, high-quality braided hair has become scarce. Hair is renewable, but it grows slowly, so demand often outpaces supply, pushing prices higher. Some sellers compromise on quality to remain competitive, so buying from reputable and well-known brands is crucial for high-quality wigs.

Craftsmanship

A common question for beginners is: “Are wigs hot to wear?” Comfort varies by individual. While it can be warm in summer, the desire to look beautiful often outweighs the heat. To understand comfort, it helps to know about wig construction, mainly divided into machine-made and hand-tied wigs.

1. Machine-made wigs:
Hair strands are first grouped into wefts, which are then attached to a net base using machines. Most steps are automated, lowering labor costs. Machine-made wigs are more affordable and ideal for beginners or those who frequently change hairstyles.

Limitations:

  • Hair direction is fixed, making later styling changes difficult.

  • Layered wefts add weight and reduce breathability compared to hand-tied wigs.

2. Hand-tied wigs:
As the name suggests, each hair strand is manually tied to the net base to mimic natural hair growth. This process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, taking 20–40 days per wig.

Advantages:

  • Individual strands create a three-dimensional, natural, and voluminous look.

  • Lighter and more breathable.

  • Full appearance from any angle.

Drawback:

  • Higher price due to labor and time.

3. Needle-punched (ventilated) hand-tied wigs:
A specialized hand-tied technique, the needle-punched method creates a realistic scalp appearance, often called “simulation scalp” wigs. Hair is tied to a net, then individually punched through a fine mesh resembling a scalp. A comfortable and aesthetically pleasing net covers the base.

Advantages:

  • Hair can be parted freely.

  • Highly realistic and comfortable.

  • Slightly more expensive due to labor intensity.

This method is especially suitable for those seeking realistic appearance and comfort.

Trying Wigs in Professional Stores

If you have access to a professional wig store, it’s recommended to try wigs on in person. Professional wig stylists can recommend the most suitable wig based on your needs and face shape, trimming and styling it to achieve a look indistinguishable from natural hair.

Remember: styling is just the beginning. A wig’s quality, breathable base, proper fit, and good hair are all crucial. Daily wear and care directly affect its lifespan.
